Manish Malhotra at India Couture Week 2017

Manish Malhotra is a stage at his career where he is only competing against himself. Last evening, the designer closed India Couture Week 2017 with his show, ‘Sensual Affair’. The Wedding Design Company put together the set that included a reflective mirrored flooring and black flowers hanging overhead, nearly mimicking the actual decor for a cocktail reception or a sangeet party.

Malhotra’s 85 looks on runway took everything you knew about bridal couture in India and put it in a brighter, bolder, magnified perspective. Forget about ensembles with trains the wearer is afraid of being stepped on—Malhotra’s version had trains that demanded space—almost as though wearing his clothes would give the wearer their rightful importance on an evening.

There were tasseled tops, feather trims, the return of the ’90s corset version of a blouse and trailing capes, each design meant to signify liberation and glamour at its best. Somehow, the shine on the clothes and the runway complemented each other rather than seeming overpowering. Malhotra’s keen eye for detail even had him assign a strict dress code of black for the attendees. The front row included the likes of Shweta Nanda Bachchan, Huma Qureshi, Sophie Choudry, Natasha Poonawala and more.

Apparently, Ranveer Singh walking the runway for the designer had been on the cards for nearly three years, and finally took place last night. Alia Bhatt, who worked with Manish Malhotra on her very first film, Student of the Year, shares a long-term relationship with him. Bhatt’s tulle lehenga with rosettes came with its own crinoline skirt and four handlers to adjust the train. At the head ramp, Ranveer Singh caused Bhatt to burst out in giggles. Joined in by the designer, the trio made the perfect picture for the finale.

While Singh and Bhatt flew back on a chartered flight to Mumbai the very same night, Malhotra’s after party had everyone who worked on the show with the designer in attendance.
